Art Class: Sidewalk Art Tips and Tricks*
Date & Time: Saturday, April 11th at 10:30 a.m.

Join me for a fun and informative art class where I’ll teach you how to create amazing sidewalk art using proven techniques!

This class is designed to introduce new participants to the wonderful world of chalk art and to provide a refresher for experienced artists, in preparation for our DIA* chalk festival.

Sign up today for your spot on the sidewalk! Reserve your sidewalk space here

What you’ll learn:

  • Grid Method:
Use a grid system to enlarge your design accurately, keeping proportions correct and preventing distortion. Start drawing and coloring from the top of your square, then work your way down.
  • Water Technique:
For vivid, bright colors, go over wet chalk with a dry chalk stick of the same color.
  • Layering:
Apply a base layer of chalk, blend it, then add more chalk on top for richer, more vibrant colors that fill in surface texture.
  • Blending Tools:
Use your fingertips for small areas, or try a carpet square or a piece of pool noodle for blending larger areas smoothly.
  • Washed Effect:
Draw with dry chalk, then use a paintbrush with water to blend, creating a watercolor or “washed-out” look.
  • Detailing:
Use the sharp point of chalk for fine details and the flat edge for coloring larger areas.
  • Cleaning/Erasing:
Use a toothbrush or damp microfiber cloth to clean mistakes and erase fine details.

Safety and Comfort Tips:

  • Avoid Inhaling Dust:
Don’t blow or fan chalk dust into the air—it’s unhealthy to breathe and dulls your colors.
  • Comfort:
Bring knee pads or a cushion since working on the ground can be tough on your knees and body.
