The Lion Women of Tehran
Novel by Marjan Kamali
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali is a novel about the decades-long friendship between two girls from different social classes in Tehran, Ellie and Homa, set against the backdrop of Iran’s political upheaval from the 1950s to the present day. The story explores themes of friendship, feminism, social class, and political activism as their bond is tested by personal betrayals and the dramatic changes in their country, particularly the Iranian Revolution. The narrative follows their lives as they grow from childhood friends to women navigating love, loss, and ambition in a changing world, with the “lion women” (Shir-Zan) representing their shared dream for a more egalitarian Iran.
Don’t forget, we meet every 3rd Monday of the month — mark your calendars!
